What is Column Starter in Building Construction?

 Column Starter:

Column Starter or Shoe or Kicker
Column Starter/Shoe/Kicker

It is also known as "Column Shoe" or "Column Kicker".

It is a small part of the column which is casted one day before the casting of the main column.

The cross-sectional area of the starter is the same as the column and the height is between 3 to 4 inches( 75 mm to 100 mm).

Reason to provide Column Starter:

The only reason to build a column starter is that it provides base support to the formwork which is needed to be fixed.

If a shoe is not provided then there is a chance of shifting formwork while pouring and tamping wet concrete, resulting in dislocation of column structure.
